Babson College Reviews Annie

Annie the Musical by the Wellesley Players

For those of us who did not have the luxury to travel to some exotic beach or have our bellies filled with home cooked meals, there was not much to do on campus over this past Spring Break.

As soon as all the lights in the dorms around campus went out however, the lights in the Carling-Sorenson Theater went on. Abandoned by Babson students, the humble abode of the Babson Players, BDE, and other student organizations was transformed into the set of the award-winning musical Annie, produced by the Wellesley Players.

Directed by Rachael Fennel, this interpretation of the children’s classic featured a range of talent from elementary school children all the way to retired men and women. With the young and gifted Lauren Weintraub as the lead actress and Bruce G. von Rosenvinge (a Babson alumnus from the class of ’84) as Oliver Warbucks, the show was a huge hit.
With six performances over the course of two weekends the theater was packed to the brim for every performance. The sound of applause and the standing ovation that followed only reflected the breath-taking piece.

In the audience, children gleamed with joy at the sight of a dog on stage and women cried after just the first song. The Wellesley Players truly exemplified the spirit of Community Theater and brought to our beloved Sorenson the sound of children’s laughter – something we sometimes forget exists.

I’ll be the first to admit that after having been in college for a year the sight of 400 children and their parents can be intimidating.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Annie on the show’s huge success and their revitalization of our theater.
